Coughing Up Blood – Causes and When to See a Doctor

Blood Vessel Issues

In some rare cases, some blood vessel issues in your lungs may be the possible cause of coughing up blood. An example is an embolism, which occurs when a blood clot is found in the lungs and leads to hemoptysis. Other risk factors include those with a history of blood clots, who have recently undergone surgery, or those who have to sit for an extended period of time. An arteriovenous malformation happens when a major vein in the body is abnormally affected. When this vein ruptures close to or in the lungs, it may cause people to cough up blood. In most cases, blood vessel issues require medical attention to prevent further complications. Treatment options depend on the affected areas, but may include supportive care, blood thinners, and surgery. [9]
