Coughing Up Blood – Causes and When to See a Doctor

Possible Causes of Coughing Up Blood

Respiratory Tract Infections

Some infections in the respiratory tract may be a cause of coughing up blood. These include pneumonia, bronchitis, or laryngitis. Studies have found that these conditions caused more than 60 percent of reported cases outside of hospital settings. Those with respiratory tract infections would have recently had a fever or common cold and experienced symptoms of illness. In mild cases, certain home remedies are enough to manage the symptoms. However, bacterial bronchitis would require antibiotic treatment. More serious cases, particularly when severe pneumonia occurs, would require hospitalization for careful monitoring, breathing treatments, antibiotics, and intravenous fluids. [2]
