Cat-Scratch Disease – Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

Possible Complications of Cat-Scratch Disease

Most cases of cat-scratch disease are mild and do not lead to complications. Nevertheless, people with weakened or compromised immune systems, such as those with diabetes or HIV/AIDS, may be at risk of certain complications. These include:

– Neuroretinitis: This complication causes inflammation in the retina and optic nerve, which leads to blurred vision. It happens when the bacteria causing cat scratch disease are spread to the eyes. Your vision tends to become better once the infection is treated.

– Encephalopathy: When the bacteria reach the brain, it may cause encephalopathy. This brain condition may cause permanent damage to the brain.

– Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome: This eye infection has similar symptoms to pink eye. It may occur when the Bartonella henselae bacteria reach the eye through the bloodstream or directly penetrate the eyes. Antibiotics can be prescribed for treating this disease. In some rare cases, a surgical procedure is necessary to get rid of infected tissues.

– Osteomyelitis: This bacterial infection affects the bones and leads to bone damage. In more serious cases, it may be necessary to do amputation. [7]
