Classifications of Prediabetes and Diabetes
Precautions and recommendations for exercise and physical activity can vary, depending on the diabetes type. In general, there are two types: diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. Around 5 to 10 percent of cases are type 1, which results from the damage of pancreatic beta-cells that causes a deficiency of insulin. Though this may happen at any age, young people are more affected than older people. Type 2 diabetes accounts for up to 90 to 95 percent of cases. It tends to result from a gradual loss of insulin production.
Pregnant women often experience gestational diabetes mellitus. It is often diagnosed during 24 to 28 weeks of gestation. Prediabetes occurs when levels of blood glucose are above the usual range, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. [2]
