Can I Change Medicare Advantage Plans Anytime?

Special Enrollment Periods

Some life events may give you the opportunity to change a Medicare Advantage plan. In special circumstances, Medicare may provide you with a special enrollment period. Below is a list of those special events:

– Move out of the service area of your current plan

– Move back to the US from a foreign country

– Move to a new area where the current plan is not available

– Move into or out of a long-term care or skilled nursing facility

– Have been released from jail

– Do not qualify for Medicaid anymore

– Participate in a PACE plan

– Do not have health insurance from your union or employer anymore

– Medicare terminates your current plan

– Medicare sanctions your current plan

– Medicare does not renew your current plan

– You are dual eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare

– Drop your Medigap plan when you participate in a Medicare Advantage plan

– Participate in or lose a State Pharmaceutical Assistance plan

– Participate in the wrong Medicare Advantage plan due to an error from a federal employee

– You have a Special Needs Plan, but now do not have the special need anymore

– Medicare gives the plan in your area a 5-star rating [7]
