Benzodiazepines – Uses, Types, Side Effects, and Risks

Possible Interactions

Certain medications and drugs may interact with benzodiazepines and lead to possible complications or reduce the effectiveness of treatment. For instance, opioids and alcohol, both of which may have depressant effects on the central nervous system, would considerably intensify the effect of benzodiazepines. This would cause the heart function and respiration to slow down. Some other herbs and medications that may interact with benzodiazepines include St. John’s Wort, sedatives, opioid cough medicine, antibiotics, antifungals, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, and antidepressants. Due to these dangerous complications, make sure to discuss with your healthcare provider before taking other substances during benzodiazepine treatments. [7]
