Why We Cough and 6 Ways to Not Cough so Much

Identifying the Cough

Interestingly enough, some reports show that a cough is the number one reason for a doctor’s visit. This must be a worldwide epidemic. Further research shows that there are actually a number of different types of coughs. These coughs have different causes and therefore are treated differently.

One of the first differences that must be identified is what type of cough you have. One common distinction noted is the difference between a “wet cough” and a “dry cough”. A “wet cough” is a cough that produces phlegm. This cough is usually caused by a virus. These coughs usually go away relatively quickly. A “dry cough” is one that does not produce much mucus when coughing. These tend to be more irritating and last a little bit longer.
