Causes
A bucket handle meniscus tear can happen in people of all ages. However, it is more common in young people who often perform physical activities and play sports. The injury mostly occurs after twisting injuries, such as turning suddenly, changing weight, or planting the foot and knee down forcefully. People over 30 years old are often at higher risk because the meniscus begins to weaken over time. Other incidents that might lead to a bucket handle meniscus tear include a misstep while walking, squatting, or climbing stairs. Sometimes, a chronic tear can be triggered by degenerative changes in the knee joint. When arthritis makes bones in the knee joint to rub, these areas could become rough and irregular rather than smooth. These changes increase the risk of suffering from this type of knee injury.
