Aging
Age is a major risk factor for developing Parkinson’s disease. As the global population is aging, scientists estimate that the number of people with this disease tends to increase over time. The main reason is that brain cells can be more prone to damage when we become older. Another possible link is the decline of dopamine function in the elderly. Moreover, the expression of genes can change over time. This results in a series of cellular events that cause Parkinson’s disease. Along with aging, gender can also play a role. In general, the number of cases and risk tend to be higher in men than in women. The exact cause of this difference is still unknown. [5]
