What are the Early Signs of Melanoma?

B: Border + C: Color

The second feature to check is the border or edge of the moles. It is the area where the colored part meets the rest of the skin. In melanomas, the border tends to be uneven, which is different from benign moles with smooth borders. Vague borders with unclearly defined lines may also indicate melanomas. Keep in mind that a smooth border may not be a perfect circle. It may be misshapen or have a jagged edge [2].

If the mole is benign, it tends to have a consistent color, usually a single brown shade. Multiple colors can be a warning sign of melanoma. They can have various shades of black, tan, or brown. When the moles grow, they may turn into different hues, such as blue, white, or red [3].
