What are Demodex Mites?

Demodex Mites Risk Factors

Scientists believe that HIV, AIDS, and other conditions that affect the immune system can increase the risk of Demodex mites. The reason is that the immune system plays a role in keeping the number of these organisms on the skin in check. When a problem occurs in this system, Demodex mites can grow and spread more easily. Drugs like topical steroids or chemotherapy may affect the immune response and make you more prone to an overgrowth of these mites as well. Other risk factors include:

– Gender: Demodex mites tend to be more common in men than in women

– Age: Older people tend to experience Demodex mites, while they often do not present before you reach 40 years old

– Immune function: A compromised or weakened immune system can put you at risk. [5]
