Waking up with Scratches: Causes and Treatment

Parasomnia or Sleepwalking

Parasomnia is a sleep issue that causes people to scratch themselves or do other movements during sleep that would leave scratches. Similarly, sleepwalking may result in accidents due to tripping or falling when you are sleeping. It is not always possible to prevent parasomnia and sleepwalking. However, you may take care of the overall emotional and mental health to reduce the risk. Having good sleep hygiene can also help, such as sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, avoiding using digital devices before sleep, avoiding taking naps during the day, or reducing the consumption of caffeine before bedtime. Treating underlying physical or mental problems that cause itching would help treat parasomnia. The same goes for sleepwalking as you need to talk with your doctor to identify the causes. [4]
