Uterine Fibroids – Diagnosis & Treatment

Medications

In severe cases when fibroids cause painful sensations, some medications can provide temporary relief. They work by changing the levels of hormones that cause fibroids to develop. After several weeks or months, these growths will decrease in size. Gn-RH agonists are the most common options that would block the release of progesterone and estrogen. This will temporarily stop the period and shrink the fibroids. Similarly, tranexamic acid could lighten the period and prevent heavy bleeding. Some OTC NSAIDs such as naproxen and ibuprofen can also be effective in easing the pain caused by fibroids. However, they will not deal with the underlying causes. [7]
