Tooth Sensitive to Hot and Cold – Causes and Treatments

Possible Causes of Tooth Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

A loss of enamel that leads to tooth sensitivity may be caused by many reasons. These include tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, teeth grinding, tooth injury, receding gums, acidic foods, harsh dental-care products (alcohol-based mouthwashes, whitening toothpastes), tooth infection, some forms of dental work (fillings, crowns), poor oral hygiene, restricted access to oral care, smoking, and forceful brushing. For cases triggered by a chronic underlying condition, pain tends to recur when drinking or eating. In other circumstances, such as in those with acute tooth injury, symptoms would happen unexpectedly when exposed to cold or heat. [4]
