What are the causes of tonsillitis?
Tonsils are the first line of defense against any type of infection. They synthesize white blood cells that help your body fight infection, and fight bacteria and viruses that invade your body via your nose or mouth. However, like every organ on the body, tonsils are also susceptible to infection. When the tonsils develop infection or become inflamed, it leads to a condition known as tonsillitis.
A virus, such as the common cold, can cause tonsillitis. Bacterial infections, like strep throat, can also cause this condition. Therefore, the primary cause of tonsillitis is infection of the tonsils.
