Cold sores may cause pain or discomfort sometimes. Thus, you may take OTC painkillers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce inflammation and pain. Cold sores may be followed by a fever as well. And acetaminophen may also work as a fever-reducer. It is important to follow the instructions and take the drugs as directed. Avoid combining different medications to avoid interactions. If symptoms still persist for more than several days or even become worse, consult your doctor for better treatment options.
