Symptoms of Fifth Disease in Pregnant Women

It is estimated that around 50 percent of women in pregnancy are immune to the virus causing the fifth disease. This means that they will not develop the condition even when they are exposed. In those people who are not immune, mild symptoms can happen, such as a mild rash, swelling, and joint pain. An important thing to know is that the mother would transmit the virus to her baby. This can lead to serious anemia in some cases, which would increase the risk of miscarriage. However, the risk is quite low and often occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy. Currently, there is still no treatment option for the fifth disease in pregnant women. However, closely monitoring with bloodwork or ultrasounds is needed to prevent possible complications.[7]
