Adenotonsillectomy
Adenotonsillectomy is a common treatment for sleep apnea in children. In this procedure, the tonsils and adenoids will be removed. This may help open up your airways and improve the symptoms of sleep apnea. Previous studies have shown that in children with smaller tonsils and healthy bodyweight may have lower risk and recovery when only the adenoids are removed. Nevertheless, in those with larger tonsils, the treatment would not be as effective as the removal of both the adenoids and tonsils. [5]
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or UPPP is the most common surgery for people with sleep apnea. In this treatment, your surgeon will remove excess tissue in the tonsils, soft palate, and the pharynx before closing up the incisions. This treated area is called the oropharynx, which is responsible for most cases of sleep apnea. You may need to stay overnight in the hospital and experience a lot of pain during recovery.
