Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that protects the nerve cell from breakdown. How does it work? It opposes the destructive effects of free radicals on nerve membrane (or covering). Then it stimulates other antioxidant mechanisms in order to strengthen the reversal of nerve damage by free radicals. In some studies, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) has been shown to decrease the severity of symptoms of neuropathy in people. Other studies reveal relief of some symptoms associated with neuropathy, especially pain, itching, and numbness. Combining alpha-lipoic acid with irbesartan may cause a reduction in inflammation of nerves in addition to other benefits. Some natural foods contain ALA in small amounts. They include broccoli, liver, brewer’s yeast, and red meat. [5]
