Canker sores or mouth ulcers are also a common cause of sore tongue. In this case, you might notice an oval or round spot that is painful and white in look. It can also have other tones such as gray, yellow, or red. These spots would develop for many reasons, such as stopping smoking, consuming some foods, experiencing anxiety or stress, eating sharp or hard things, having hormonal changes, orbiting the tongue. Canker sores would heal themselves after a few weeks without treatments. You would take OTC pain medications to alleviate the discomfort and pain.
