Restless Legs Syndrome Fact Sheet

Medication Options

Medications cannot cure restless legs syndrome, but they can control symptoms. Common options include:

– Medications that increase dopamine, thus helping reduce leg motions. These include rotigotine, ropinirole, and pramipexole. Nausea and lightheadedness can be possible side effects.

– Muscle relaxants and sleep aids: Zolpidem, zaleplon, temazepam, eszopiclone, or clonazepam. They can relax your body and allow for better sleep. Daytime sleepiness can be a side effect.

– Anticonvulsants: pregabalin, gabapentin enacarbil, or gabapentin can reduce sensory issues.

– Opioids: oxycodone or codeine can reduce discomfort and pain. However, they are addicting and potent. [7]
