Treatment Options
There is currently no particular treatment option for both types of prolymphocytic leukemia. Your treatment mostly depends on how quickly the condition progresses, your age, reported symptoms, as well as the form you have. Because this is a rare health issue, the doctor tends to suggest a specific treatment plan for each case. In many cases, you may be encouraged to sign up for some clinical trials for testing new drugs. Possible treatments for people with prolymphocytic leukemia include:
– Medication: Drugs called targeted therapy can be taken prevent cancer cells from growing and spreading. You can use them in combination with other treatments or on their own
– Chemotherapy: This method is used to control the progression of prolymphocytic leukemia
– Radiation therapy: This procedure can be used for the spleen when surgery is not an option
– Surgery: The main goal is to remove the spleen, which helps improve blood counts and alleviate the increased pressure due to an enlarged spleen
– Stem cell transplants: Those in remission from prolymphocytic leukemia after a round of chemotherapy can be eligible for this treatment option. This is the only known cure for the condition [6]
