Neuromyelitis optica is associated with harmful autoantibodies. These substances are often generated only when the immune system detects an attack from bacteria or viruses. However, when they build up in a large amount, some optic nerves and areas of the spinal cord can be affected, thus increasing the risk of the condition. Two specific forms associated with this health issue include myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein and aquaporin-4 Note.
