Miscarriage – 10 Facts to Know

Causes of Miscarriage

During pregnancy, the body of women provides nutrients and hormones to the fetus. This helps the fetus develop and grow. Most cases of miscarriages in the first trimester occur when the fetus does not develop properly. Some factors would contribute to this. Firstly, chromosome or genetic problems can be a possible cause. These include blighted ovum, partial molar pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or intrauterine fetal demise.

Certain lifestyle habits and underlying health conditions could affect the growth of a fetus as well. These include alcohol and drug abuse, malnutrition due to poor diet, thyroid disease, advanced maternal age, hormonal problems, uncontrolled diabetes, trauma, infectious diseases, cervix issues, obesity, high blood pressure, food poisoning, and side effects of some medications. Keep in mind that sexual intercourse and exercise do not lead to miscarriages. [4]
