Surgery
When mesothelioma is diagnosed in the early stages, surgery can be suggested to remove the tumor. This option is also suitable for advanced stages when cancer cells have spread to other body parts. Some surgical procedures to treat mesothelioma include:
– Pleurectomy: This procedure removes tissue around your lungs and ribs. It can alleviate certain symptoms, but cannot cure the condition.
– Pleural mesothelioma often causes an accumulation of fluids in the chest, which leads to trouble breathing. Your doctor would drain it by inserting a catheter or tube into the chest. Medicine can also be injected to reduce the risk of occurrence.
– In people with peritoneal mesothelioma, surgery can remove most of the cancer cells [6]
