Mesothelioma – Diagnosis and Treatment

Biopsy

The biopsy is a diagnostic test that removes a small part of body tissue to test in the lab. It is the only way to find out if you have mesothelioma. There are several options to choose from, depending on the affected area. These include:

– Getting a sample during surgery: During operation, a sample of tissue or fluid can be collected. The doctor will start with a small incision and then use a camera to check inside the abdomen or chest.

– Inserting the needle through your skin: Your doctor can also insert a thin needle through the skin area on the abdomen or chest to remove tissue or fluid.

The sample is later analyzed in the lab under a microscope to check for signs of mesothelioma and the involved forms of cells, which can determine the right treatment plan.[2]
