Surgery for Lung Abscess
In rare circumstances when a lung abscess is so serious, a surgical procedure may be needed. The most common options include a segmentectomy or a lumpectomy, which removes the abscesses and surrounding tissues. This can be usually performed with minimally invasive surgery. Some signs that may indicate the possibility of surgery include sepsis, coughing up blood, large abscesses, empyema, bronchopleural fistula development, persistent fever, increased number of white blood cells, suspected cancer, and an unsuccessful treatment with drainage or antibiotics.
