Types of Lip Licker’s Dermatitis
Based on the cause, lip licker’s dermatitis can be divided into two main types. These include:
– Exogenous: This form is triggered by factors outside of the body.
– Endogenous: It is caused by internal factors, such as genetics
Exogenous lip licker’s dermatitis can be divided further into different subtypes, such as:
– Allergic contact cheilitis: As the name implies, it is caused by an allergic reaction to foods, medications, toothpaste, or any products you use. It accounts for up to 25 percent of reported cases. A patch test may be done to find out which allergens are causing the symptoms.
– Irritant contact cheilitis: While symptoms are quite similar to those of allergic contact cheilitis, this form is caused by chronic exposure to irritants, such as weather conditions, foods, or cosmetics. [2]
