Lewy Body Dementia – Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

4 Causes of Lewy Body Dementia

Abnormal Protein Buildup

Lewy body is mainly caused when some proteins in the body build up abnormally into masses, which are called Lewy bodies. These growths are also related to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Those patients who have some Lewy bodies in the brains tend to have tangles and plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease as well. Studies have shown that Lewy bodies would lead to a loss of several brain neurons that are responsible for producing two essential neurotransmitters for the communication between brain cells. One of both is dopamine, which plays a key role in mood, sleep, motivation, movement, and cognition. The other is acetylcholine, which is necessary for learning and memory. [8]
