Hyperkalemia (High Blood Potassium) – Symptoms & Signs

Swelling

Another common symptom of hyperkalemia is the swelling of some body parts, mostly the ankles and feet. They are caused when excess potassium in the blood affects the normal functions of your kidneys. As a result, these organs are unable to get rid of harmful substances and unnecessary liquids from the body. You would notice these swollen parts after taking off the shoes. They tend to get worse during the night after you have been using your feet for the whole day. Keep in mind that pregnancy would also cause swelling, but it is completely normal. [2]
