Hypercholesterolemia – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Causes

Genetics

Some genetic factors may increase the risk of developing hypercholesterolemia. This means the condition is more likely to occur in those with parents or siblings with a history of this condition. Therefore, some individuals may have high levels of blood cholesterol at young ages, even during childhood. The most common genetic defects that would increase the likelihood include PCK9, LDLRAP1, LDLR, or APOB. Especially, familial hypercholesterolemia can be inherited. A genetic mutation affects the LDLR gene, which leads to low-density lipoprotein receptors. [3]
