Hip Bursitis Treatment

Rest

A simple way to treat hip bursitis is to rest well. This means you should stop participating in any physical activities or sports, which would worsen the symptoms. If you keep moving or doing exercises, it may lead to more inflammation of the bursae. By resting, you may reduce pressure on the affected parts and speed up recovery. If necessary, you may seek help from a physical therapist. They may help you perform some suitable movements to restore muscle functions and prevent flare-ups. [2]

Heat and Cold Therapy

When the symptoms of hip bursitis first occur, you may use heat and cold therapy to get temporary relief. For cold therapy, put an ice pack on the affected area for around 15 minutes. Low temperatures can make the blood vessels to constrict, thus reducing inflammation and swelling. Do not put ice directly on the skin as it would cause frostbite. For heat therapy, you may place an electric blanket or a heating pad on the hip. It is also possible to have a hot tub or bath. Make sure to check the temperature to avoid burning your skin. [3]
