Glaucoma Causes & Risk Factors

Genetics

Certain genetic factors could determine the occurrence of glaucoma. More specifically, several forms might run in families. This means if your grandparent or parent had glaucoma, then you can be at a higher risk of developing the disease. Many studies have also shown that those with African descent or African-Americans are considerably more likely to be affected by glaucoma than Caucasians. In addition, those with Japanese descent are at a higher risk of low-tension glaucoma, while those people with Asian descent tend to be at a higher risk of developing angle-closure glaucoma.[6]
