AAT Deficiency

Alpha-1 antitrypsin or AAT is a natural protein in your blood. It is responsible for protecting normal lung tissues from white blood cells, which are important for fighting infections. When you have a deficiency of AAT, your immune system will damage some lung cells and trigger emphysema. This condition mostly occurs in children and infants. In more advanced phases, it can even spread and damage your liver. Adults with AAT deficiency would be treated by the replacement of the missing AAT. [10]
