Causes of an Embolism
Some possible causes of an embolism may include:
– Blood clots that move in the bloodstream and get stuck, which subsequently prevents the blood flow from reaching internal organs. Pregnancy, cancer, heart disease, and obesity may increase the risk of blood clots in the veins.
– Air bubbles may penetrate the bloodstream and cause embolisms. This cause is common in scuba divers.
– Severe atherosclerosis may cause cholesterol to build up and increase the risk of an embolism.
– A fracture in a long bone may result in the buildup of fat tissues that may block the bloodstream. [7]
