Does Acid Reflux Cause Headaches?

Link between GERD and Headaches

Some studies have suggested a link between gastroesophageal reflux disease and headaches. However, it is still not fully understood why this occurs. In general, headaches tend to be a symptom of many gastrointestinal illnesses. These include indigestion, constipation, inflammatory bowel disorders and syndrome, functional abdominal pain, H. pylori infection, and celiac disease. It is estimated that around 30% to 50% of those with chronic headaches have gastroesophageal reflux disease as well. Scientists have not found out which comes first: headaches or the disease. Some believe that this may be related to increased sensitivity to signals in the parasympathetic system when the body suffer from pain. In addition, problems with the autonomic nervous system may also lead to both conditions. Other common causes of both headaches and gastroesophageal reflux disease include serotonin levels, medications, and food allergies. [2]
