Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Causes & Risk Factors

Birth Control

Many studies have suggested that women taking combination hormonal birth control like progestin and estrogen are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis. These include the vaginal ring, patch, and birth control pills. The pills have a lower risk compared to the other twos. These options contain progestin hormones drospirenone and desogestrel, which can cause blood clots. It is estimated that around 5 to 10 percent of women between 15 and 44 years old develop deep vein thrombosis after taking birth control pills. The risk can increase a few times when they use second-generation and third-generation ones. [2]
