Croup – Diagnosis and Treatment

Chest X-Ray

An X-ray is not required to diagnose croup. However, it can be used to confirm the doctor’s assumptions and rule out other similar conditions. The results can reveal a lot of helpful information. The steeple sign on the images of your chest or neck suggests a uniform narrowing of the trachea or subglottic airway. Lateral radiographs in the upper airway can present a narrowing in the subglottic area and a normal epiglottis. Lastly, an X-ray can also find out a distended hypopharynx because people with croup tend to have their airway resistance reduced.[2]
