Common Facts about Pineal Gland

Anatomy of the Pineal Gland

The pineal gland is small and has a pine-cone shape. Autopsy studies have suggested that it has a similar size to that of a grain of rice, which ranges between 5 and 9 millimeters. In adults, the weight is only around 0.1 grams. The organ is comprised of portions of neurons, neuroglial cells, and pinealocytes, which are forms of endocrine cells. The pineal gland is located in a fluid-filled area called the third ventricle, deep inside the brain. This region extends from the lateral ventricles to the cerebral aqueduct, running between the two halves of the brain. [2]
