Chronic Venous Insufficiency – Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and More

Causes of Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when valves in the veins do not function properly. Specifically, they may be damaged or dilated, causing blood to flow back to the legs rather than to the heart as usual. Some factors may result in these problems. The most common cause of venous insufficiency is deep vein thrombosis, a condition that causes a blood clot in the leg veins. Other possible causes may include sitting or standing for an extended period of time, aging, vein problems at birth, reduced mobility or lack of physical activities, and pelvic tumors. In some cases, there may be no clear reason for the defective valves in the veins that lead to chronic venous insufficiency. [4]
