Autism Causes & Risk Factors

Medications

Some prescription medications, such as valproic acid and thalidomide, are associated with the development of autism in children. If a pregnant woman takes those drugs regularly before delivery, it would affect the brain of the newborn baby. These effects can be significant in the early stages of pregnancy, specifically during 20 days of conception. A prostaglandin analog called misoprostol would also cause the same complication. That is why pregnant women should consult their healthcare providers carefully before taking. Some studies also show that children who take acetaminophen after rubella and measles mumps vaccine tend to be at higher risk of becoming autistic than those who do not. [5]
