8 Types of Multiple Myeloma

Extramedullary Plasmacytoma

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is characterized by cancerous cells that begin outside the extramedullary or bone marrow in soft tissues. This type mostly occurs in some specific parts of the body around the upper respiratory tract, such as voice box or larynx, nose, sinuses, and throat. In more severe cases, it would also spread to other areas, such as the brain, breast, and gastrointestinal tract. Around 30 percent of cases develop multiple myeloma later. A biopsy is the best way to diagnose extramedullary plasmacytoma. A PET scan or MRI can also be used to show some possible signs. The main treatments include surgery and radiation therapy. [6]
