Hematoma
A hematoma happens when you drop a heavy object on the finger or crush it. After this incident, blood and other fluids would accumulate under the nail, which eventually leads to pain. A hematoma would appear like a bruise under the nail. The affected nail would also change color and show up in black, brown, or purple. After a few months, the hematoma may grow out with the nail. Some home remedies can help with this issue, such as OTC pain medications, finger elevation, and cold compress, finger resting, and gently pressing to reduce bleeding. When a hematoma becomes very painful or worse, you should seek medical attention immediately. A doctor would drain the affected area to reduce the pressure that triggers the pain. [4]
