Meningitis
Meningitis can occur as a result of complications from the mumps virus. When mumps is not diagnosed and treated early enough, it often leads to various complications. When the underlying symptoms are neglected or for whatever reasons are not noticed, the mumps virus can spread to the protective layer of the brain and spinal cord, leading to an inflammation of this layer (meningitis), which will, in turn, lead to some other symptoms. Meningitis can be life-threatening, especially when it is bacterial, but in the case of viral meningitis like the one caused by the mumps virus, it only leads to some mild symptoms [10]
