Types of Choledocholithiasis

There are up to 10 kinds of choledocholithiasis and ten subtypes, which can in symptoms and causes. The three main types include:

– Cholesterol gallstones

This type is characterized by a yellow or green color. They often form inside the gallbladder before traveling to the bile duct and tends to consist of cholesterol. Cholesterol gallstones are the most common form in many developed nations.

– Pigment gallstones

This type tends to have a brown color. They typically form inside the bile duct, especially the common bile duct. Pigment gallstones consist of bilirubin.

– Mixed gallstones

This type is a combination of 2 or more elements, such as cystine, protein, phosphate, and calcium.

In addition, choledocholithiasis can be divided into residual gallstones, which are left behind after cholecystectomy and recurrent gallstones, which keep developing after a removal.[2]
