10 Causes of Anemia You Need to Know

Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases also play roles in the development of anemia. It is a disease in which your body’s immune system attacks healthy cells. In other words, your body’s immune system is overactive, attacks and damages its tissues.

In the process of the body fighting healthy cells, it also affects the stem cells in the bone marrow. Since the stem cells are needed for the formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow, their absence or damages will result in less production of red blood cells and lead to anemia.

Some of these autoimmune diseases are Sjogren syndrome, Hashimoto thyroiditis, juvenile diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, polymyositis, Addison disease, vitiligo, and scleroderma.
