Abnormal Posturing: Types, Causes, and Diagnosis

What Is Abnormal Posturing?

Abnormal posturing is characterized by abnormal body positions or rigid movements. These problems may be chronic, meaning that they last for years or even longer. Unlike slumping over or poor posture, people with abnormal posturing tend to move one or certain parts of the body in an unusual manner or hold a specific body position. Many of these behaviors are often the result of a serious injury in the brain or spinal cord. During a muscle contraction, muscles on other joints typically resist. But in abnormal posturing, these muscles cannot provide proper resistance, resulting in abnormal movements. [1]
