What Is the Somogyi Effect?

Causes of Somogyi Effect

The Somogyi effect happens in those people who have diabetes and have to use insulin injections to control their levels of blood sugar. When they take too much insulin before going to sleep at night or do not eat enough before the sleeping time, it reduces levels of blood sugar too much in the morning. This condition is also known as hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. To respond, the body produces more hormones like epinephrine and glucagon to increase the levels of blood sugar. However, blood sugar levels may be raised too high in some cases. For this reason, the Somogyi effect is also known as the rebound effect. While many people with diabetes and doctors widely report this effect, there is actually not much scientific proof to support the theory behind it. [4]
