Important Concepts in Reality Therapy
The key concepts in reality therapy include:
– Behavior: This is the main part of reality therapy. Your therapist will try to identify ineffective behaviors and change them into more effective ones.
– Control: The only one who can control you is yourself. In other words, internal factors determine your behaviors. If external factors control you, it is not ineffective for leading to changes.
– Action: Actions are part of the overall behaviors. It is possible to manage the actions. Therefore, reality therapy tries to change your behaviors by adjusting actions.
– Responsibility: There is a close association between responsibility and control. People are irresponsible in filfiling their needs when they make a bad decision. Thus, reality therapy tries to improve the accountability of your acts.
– Present moment: Current actions and behaviours are not affected by the past, but the current unfulfilled needs. [7]
