Reality Therapy – What You Need to Know

Reality Therapy versus Choice Theory

In general, reality therapy is based on another therapy called choice theory, which was also developed by William Glasser. According to the choice theory, there are 5 genetic instructions, which are fundamental and genetically-linked needs, that every human has. These include enjoyment or fun, independence or freedom, achievement or power, belonging and love, as well as survival. They do not exist in any specific order. However, Dr. Glasser declared that belonging and love is the main thing that we need. That’s why there is a link between mental issues and relationships. Another key point of choice theory is that we behave to meet unfinished needs. This process is controlled by internal factors. When our behaviors are affected by external factors, such as circumstances or people, it may lead to psychological problems. [6]
